Let Garlic be your Antibiotic

Let's talk about the wonders of garlic.

Before we get into the facts, let's get a bit personal.


A little story from my life that may help you along your path.

I live quite naturally and cannot remember the last time I took pharmaceutical medication, not during my two natural childbirths, not for a headache or any other reason...except...well...


In my second pregnancy, my urine test came back positive with some unhealthy bacteria. The doctor diagnosed it as an asymptomatic bladder infection, meaning I didn't feel anything, but nonetheless, there was bacteria causing an infection. Since I was pregnant, and it could theoretically cause a preterm birth, I was advised to take antibiotics to treat it.


Based on some fear surrounding the possibility of a preterm birth, I decided to take the antibiotic. After the complete round of the antibiotic Amoxicillin, my urine was tested and showed the bacteria was still there.


So I tried some natural remedies, including cranberry juice, and again, my little friends were still with me.


My midwife this time, along with my doctor, recommended another antibiotic called Macrobid, and when it did not work, I was advised to take Cephalexin. Each of these antibiotics were 7-14 days in length and each time my urine was tested, the antibiotic had not cleared the infection.


To me, this is extreme...to take 3 rounds of 3 different antibiotics and have none of them clear away the bacteria. I'm not sharing this story because I am proud of it..the fact that I was pregnant makes me feel quite the opposite, considering I am all about natural and organic.


My midwife (who was a great midwife) was about to prescribe me a fourth type of antibiotic, and I said no. It wasn't going to happen. I went home and did my homework, and guess what little angel came onto the stage?


GARLIC !!


Garlic is pure medicine.

Yummy, spicy, delicious, medicine.


According to studies from the US National Institute of Health, and Oregon State University, the therapeutic benefits of garlic include:

  • Prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases

  • Anti-tumor effects

  • Anti-cancer effects

  • Anti-inflammatory effects

  • Anti-microbial

  • Anti-fungal

  • Anti-protozoal

  • Anti-bacterial

  • Liver protection from toxic agents

  • Anti-oxidant


Pharmaceutical antibiotics have their place in medicine and can save lives. They are also very often over prescribed. Besides degrading the gut microbiome of people taking the antibiotics, this over prescription has created another problem: antibiotic resistant bacteria. Bacteria that have changed in response to the medicine, making the medicine ineffective.


Antibiotic Resistance

According to The World Health Organization, antibiotic resistance:

  • is one of the biggest threats to global health and food security

  • can affect anyone, anywhere

  • occurs naturally, but misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process

  • makes infections harder to treat

  • increases medical costs and mortality rates


Garlic to combat antibiotic resistance:

As research into garlic continues, studies are finding that garlic can be effective against multi-drug resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria associated with urinary tract and other infections.


If a situation is not life threatening, a safer and more effective approach may be first to try garlic as an antibiotic.



How to Prepare Garlic as an antibiotic

This recipe activates allicin within the garlic, which is the therapeutic compound that heightens the benefits of garlic.

  1. Crush, crush, chop, chop. Raw garlic must be crushed to release an enzyme called alliinase, which will bring therapeutic action to the garlic. Crush 3 cloves of garlic in the morning and 3 cloves in the evening for a total of 6 cloves per day.

  2. After crushing, let the garlic sit and aerate for 10 minutes.

  3. Next, chop the 3 cloves of garlic into tiny pieces.

  4. Put the chopped 3 cloves into a cup of warm filtered water and let sit for 5 minutes.

  5. Drink the warm garlic water and swallow all the pieces of chopped garlic. If some pieces stay at the bottom of the cup, take them out with a spoon and swallow them with fresh filtered water.

  6. Do this in the morning and in the evening for 5 days.


This is the recipe that for me, healed what 3 prescriptions of antibiotics could not. After 5 days, gone were the unhealthy bladder-infection causing bacteria.

This recipe can also be used as prevention and to help keep a clean internal body.
